The economic base of S. João da Madeira is not concentrated today in only one area. On the contrary, its industrial diversity - in the so-called traditional industries - has become evidence. The footwear industry joins the mattress industry, car components and even hat industry, among others that stand out in the economic panorama of the city.
In this panorama, in January 2012, the city council of S. João da Madeira launched an Industrial Tourism project, financed by ON.2, consisting of a set of industrial tourist circuits, with the objective of combining the preservation of the industrial archaeological legacy with the promotion of the industries considered traditional and the new creative and technological industries, through the visitation of different manufacturing units in the county.
According to some researchers, companies with industrial production spaces become a tourist product, where the work of some turns in to the leisure of others.
After the conquest of a prominent place at national level, affirming itself as a reference project for other municipalities, the Industrial Tourism intends to extend its circuits to new companies of the county.
The Welcome Center, which functions in the emblematic Oliva Tower, which, in addition to its function as a booking center, also functions as a welcome space for all visitors. For the place reached, the municipality is currently coordinating the working group for the creation of the Standard of Quality of Industrial Tourism in Portugal, integrated in a technical committee presided over by Turismo de Portugal.
